We know that sitting all day is killing us, and that we should take regular standing and walking breaks. If you want to get away from your desk but still stay productive, consider some “walking tasks”.
A lot of tasks we handle throughout the workday can be handled standing or walking around. Here are some examples:
- Planning the day: Take your planning mobile. Stand up at your desk when making your to-do list, then Email it to yourself so you can have it on the computer when you sit down.
- Meetings: This will take some pitching, but walking meetings are better for keeping everyone awake as well as giving everyone some time on their feet. Even if you’re just walking for the first 5-10 minutes of an hour long meeting walking as you go over the brief, it’s better than sitting the entire time.
- Take Bathroom Breaks: A lot of us have shy bladder when in public places (I know I do). Lose it! There’s no easier way to take a quick walk with no questions asked than going to the bathroom at work.
- Brainstorming: We’ve already discussed how walking will boost your creativity, so brainstorming is really the perfect time to get a walk in. Whether you’re brainstorming solo or with a group, you should always do it while walking.
- Winding Down: At the days end we’re typically doing tasks that we can be doing while standing, like sending final Emails and shutting down the computer. Stand up to do this. The earlier you stop sitting for the day, the better.
There are plenty of ways to stand at a desk job. Take the time to do these or think about more for yourself.
