Instead of Waiting for Perfect Opportunities, Create Them

You could wait for the timing and circumstances to be perfect. Or, you could put a little energy into figuring out how to create the right opportunity.

Often we wait until the stars align before attempting a change in our lives. AppSumo founder Noah Kagan calls this “conditional living”:

“I’ll do that when…”

“It won’t work because…”

“There’s nothing available. I already looked…”

“I’ll wait until I’m fired…”

How many people wait to make a huge change or take a risk until they get fired, have a baby, or face some other challenge?

It’s way too easy to blame others instead of taking responsibility and creating the solution.

Kagan shares an example of a realtor who wanted to live in his building. None of the properties were available. Undeterred, she reached out to Kagan and each of the other owners to try to purchase their properties, despite the properties not being listed.

Even if none of the owners were interested, Kagan points out that the realtor built rapport with all potential sellers, which will help her down the line much more than simply biding her time and waiting for something to appear on the market.

Deciding to make a change doesn’t mean completely changing your way of life.

If you’re waiting around for the right circumstances, remember that some opportunities will knock sooner if you put in just a little effort.
