The Digital Thread – Harnessing the Power and Complexity of the Configuration Data Exchange

In todays connected world, more manufacturers and operators want to understand how their assets are performing. There is a lot of talk about the role of Digital Twins in depicting virtual visual assets in operation, showing live health and other aspects of data about the asset. Of particular interest to OEM’s, lessors and operators is the role of configuration (or the actual bill of material) depicted on the virtual twin.

By digitally capturing the current configuration of an asset, additional intelligence can be derived from that information when compared to the expected values (based on the OEM’s as-built allowable configuration) using product data attributes or the Digital Thread. The challenges are:

1. Collecting the configuration in service as parts are removed and replaced in maintenance or through modifications or technical bulletins

2. Integrating configuration and associated data from numerous internal systems in various formats

3. Integrating configuration and repair history data from external sources such as repair vendors

4. Ensuring a robust change management process for continuous updates

Given the challenges above, what is the value of overcoming the hurdles of managing numerous integrations, data cleansing, security and data sharing agreements? Some of the expected value includes:

·         Reducing the frequency with which maintenance orders the wrong part

·         Reducing service part inventories, by optimizing allocations based on actual component performance

·         Enabling a “live” parts catalog for each individual asset instead of depending on static, periodically updated catalogs

·         Enabling engineering to understand the impact to safety on a particular MPN across a fleet of assets, or even narrower, a group of SN’s across the fleet

·         Allowing supply chain, engineering and reliability analysts to compare different supplier parts performance across a fleet, or to identify poor vendor repair trends

·         Providing a backbone for the data to support Digital Twin virtual asset models for performance management

The Configuration Data Exchange is agnostic to the various maintenance software systems of record used by airlines, maintenance organizations and lessors.  It leverages the investments the industry has made in full content lifecycle management via ASD S1000D, mobility, and will accelerate the interlocking ASD S5000F configuration digital exchange standard and data translation capability.  These innovations will move maintenance data, content data and sensor data from an aircraft and systems of record to another federated systems of record via GE’s Predix platform.
