If you’d like to protect your siloed data standards and don’t like enterprise-wide harmonization efforts, look away now.
If, however, you’re running an Information/Data Governance (IG) program and expect to run into opposition from senior colleagues who either won’t cooperate or openly question the value of the program then please be aware that there are several possible reasons for their obstinate behaviour:
- They don’t like change. They worry about IG forcing them to adapt their data world to a new Group standard, causing unwanted system changes, historical inconsistencies, or simply extra workload.
- They don’t like other people telling them what to do. This is often about internal rivalries around power and influence that have nothing to do with IG. Sometimes these rivalries are played out openly; most of the times the true motives and puppeteers remain hidden.
- They have a very specific, jaded view of data standards and believe theirs are the best, no matter what overarching Group interests there might be.
- They are sceptical by nature.
Such ‘data mavericks’ can severely and adversely affect your IG program. Don’t avoid or exclude them. Instead you should actively involve them in the process and constantly keep them informed. Over time, they usually ‘get’ it and fall in line with the overall IG program’s goals and direction (call on your senior executive program sponsors in tough cases). Turn them into advocates and you might have powerful allies to champion your efforts down the line.
